The high, crenellated, cliffs of the Baie de Douarnenez make a striking backdrop for the rockpooling, crab hunting and shell collecting this beach is ideal for. The caves in the cliffs add a even more ‘Famous Five’ friendly element to the beach, which does have some calm shallows and non scary caves for the ‘Famous Five’ reading generation.

On the very edge of Cap Ferret, is the beach called ‘La Pointe’, the sandy expanse of which gets so buffeted by the winds and waves that tree trunk pillars have been hammered into it to help hold the beach together – the science of how this works in unclear, but apparently over the last 30 years around 400 metres worth of sandy beach has been lost from this coastline. Behind the flat beach at La Pointe are the dunes, which is where some of the sand ends up. Beyond that is more wild coastline and on the other side of the beach is the Atlantic. There’s no main road along this stretch of coast, just long thin stretches of pines and small villages living off oysters.

Cap Ferret is close enough for Bordelais to drive down for the day – so as you sit in your oyster hut right on the beach eating oysters shucked straight out of the waters it’s accompanied by a superb selection of local wines.

It was here, on this infamously clothing optional beach that Brigitte Bardot put St. Tropez on the map while filming ‘And God Created Woman’ wearing an itsy bitsy bikini.

Still a favourite with the shining stars of the film community if you do choose to wear a bathing suit make sure it’s the most daring of cuts, for most people jewellery and a triangle of cloth smaller than a folded handkerchief suffice.

For family folks there are some less racy options just along the coast, just don’t bother turning up without a hotel booking.

Softly sloping into turquoise Mediterranean seas, what this beach lacks in fine sand and palm trees it makes up for with shallow, clear as glass water and cheap camping.

Near Calvi, this is a small, secluded Corsican beach and mentioned by several non locals as one of the prettiest in the Med. Surrounded by pine trees, it slips under the radar of the beach loving crowds, but it has all the mod cons, including a charming restaurant right on the front.

The climate is closer to Italy than France, the food and culture closer to mainland France but the location is slap bang in between, a diamond along Corica’s 600 miles worth of beach-y coastline.

This beach has a shallow bay which shows up a brighter shade of blue against the white sand before dipping off to a darker hue outside the bay’s almost perfect wineglass scoop. The sand is pale to boot, the ground rises sharply from the beach and quickly turns green with the sprouting pines and eucalyptus trees, which lend their strong fragrance to the already salty beach air (smoking is banned to preserve the scent.). So it’s an experience for all the senses then? It’s just a beach, but it’s about as close to perfection as you’re going to get along the French Riviera and you’ve got the café culture, sound food and wine and a pretty town as well. And you’re on an island.

Round the headland from St. Tropez, this is a long beach, split into different sections, some chic and expensive, some belonging to beach front hotels, some naturist and others for bucket and spade families or other regular folks. The water is clear and the snorkeling is good, if not thrilling.

Pretty in the 70’s when it was a just a few holiday homes belonging to local people crowding around a beautiful stretch of beach, it’s since built up and is now best known for its family style naturist resort called ‘Naked City’. The resort has its own restaurants, shops and a haridresser, all naturist, so you can bank naked and buy your baguette naked.
